Book-to-Film Adaptations Still to Come in 2017

Book-to-film adaptations released earlier this year include Fifty Shades Darker, Hidden FiguresThe Zookeeper’s Wife, A Dog’s Purpose, and Before I Fall.  Here are more upcoming novel-to-films you can look forward to this 2017!

The Lost City of Z, based on David Grann’s novel will hit theaters in April 21st. The movie stars  Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, and Sienna Miller. It is directed by James Gray.

What is it about:  The Lost City of Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett (Charlie Hunnam), who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as “savages,” the determined Fawcett — supported by his devoted wife (Sienna Miller), son (Tom Holland) and aide-de-camp (Robert Pattinson) — returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925.

The Circle, starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and John Boyega, is an upcoming movie based on the novel of the same title by Dave Eggers.  The film is set to hit theaters on April 28th.

Everything, Everything, is based on by Nicola Yoon’s New York Times bestselling novel. The movie, which stars Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson and Anika Noni Rose, will be released in theaters on May 19th.

What is it about: In Everything, Everything, Maddy (Amandla Stenberg) is a girl who’s literally allergic to the outside world, and Olly (Nick Robinson) is the boy who moves in next door . . . and becomes the greatest risk she’s ever taken.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, based on the novel by Dav Pilkey, is set to hit theaters June 2nd.  Movie cast includes Kevin Hart, Nick Kroll, Kristen Schaal, and Ed Helms.

My Cousin Rachel, adapted from Daphne du Maurier novel, will hit theaters July 14. The movie stars Sam Claflin and Rachel Weisz.

What is it about:  It tells the story of a young Englishman who plots revenge against his mysterious, beautiful cousin, believing that she murdered his guardian. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms.

Valerian and a City of the Thousand Planets, based on Pierre Christin’s graphic novel. The cast includes Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu. The movie directed by Luc Besson is set to hit theaters July 21st.

What is it about: In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are a team of special operatives charged with maintaining order throughout the human territories. The Dark Tower, based on a novel by Stephen, stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey and Katheryn Winnick. The movie, directed by Nikolaj Arcel, is coming out in theaters on August 4th.

What is it about:  The Dark Tower series tells the story of Roland Deschain, Mid-World’s last gunslinger, who is traveling southeast across Mid-World’s post-apocalyptic landscape, searching for the powerful but elusive magical edifice known as The Dark Tower. It, a film based on Stephen King’s novel, stars  Bill Skarsgård, Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, and Jack Dylan Grazer. This 2017 film adaptation is scheduled to be released on September 8th.

What is it about:  It tells a story of seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers…an evil without a name: It.

The Mountain Between Us, is adapted from Charles Martin’s novel. It is set to hit theaters on October 20th.  The movie stars  Kate Winslet, Idris Elba and Dermot Mulroney. 

What is it about: On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport.  Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding.  Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day.   When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection.   And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently.   And then the unthinkable happens.  The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness– one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Murder on the Orient Express, is based on  Agatha Christie’s novel Murder on the Orient Express: A Hercule Poirot Mystery. The movie, which stars Kenneth Branagh,  Johnny Depp, Tom Bateman, Penélope Cruz as Greta Ohlsson, Willem Dafoe, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Judi Dench, is scheduled to hit theaters November 22nd. 

What is it about: Just after midnight, the famous Orient Express is stopped in its tracks by a snowdrift. By morning, the millionaire Samuel Edward Ratchett lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside. One of his fellow passengers must be the murderer. Isolated by the storm, detective Hercule Poirot must find the killer among a dozen of the dead man’s enemies, before the murderer decides to strike again . . .
